I was there that day and saw a boat capsize
Dhekelia
Cyprus
Circa 1981-83
Once there was a family open day at the sailing club.
A boat would take small groups of people across the water.
I was there that day and saw a boat capsize.
The thing was, a girl, perhaps 13 or 14, was trapped under that boat and I'm not sure they knew at first.
She was eventually retrieved. I'll never forget her wide open, lifeless eyes and glistening transparent-like vomit around her gaping mouth. It was terrible.
She had drowned. The man who commanded the boat had his head in his hands, crying.
They carried her into the ambulance, limbs hanging down, and drove away.
I don't know what happened later. I don't remember anything.
All I remember is this. One day I was shopping in the NAAFI up on the hill, perhaps alone. Probably buying some sweets. I was walking around and looked up an aisle.
And was dumbfounded... There she was, with her mum. Standing there. Walking around. The girl who drowned that day.
She had survived!
