1990-1991 Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

I worked for one year as part of my university industrial placement at The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) - one of the national scientific research laboratories in the UK operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

My research there concentrated specifically on OBIC - Optical Beam Induced Conductivity working in a darkened optics lab. I also suited up in special overalls to work in cleanroom environments with Scanning Electron Microscopes. During my lunch hours at RAL I remember sitting with my colleagues on the green grass in the sunshine and looking up at the site's brilliant white radio telescope.
